If you are a history fanatic, Madison, Indiana, has many sites of interest. Downtown Madison is one of the largest historic landmarks in the U.S., with 133 blocks listed in the National Register of Historic Places. And if you are a cabin lover as well, there are several places you can rent near Madison.

  1. Cabin Falls

    • This is an authentic rebuilt log cabin made from hand-hewn logs, dating from around 1893. Located three miles from downtown Madison, it sits atop a hill overlooking a brook that winds through a deep gorge. The waterfall is also visible. The cabin is surrounded by 60 acres of forests and hills that have apparently gone almost untouched for centuries. The cabin contains early American antiques but is outfitted with modern appliances and amenities such as central air conditioning, a large Jacuzzi hot tub, a full kitchen and a baby grand piano. Since the cabin is so close to historic Madison, guests can visit all of its landmark sites, antique shops and Clifly Fall State Park.

    Shelton's Ash Manor

    • The Ash Manor is a four-story 1790s log cabin. Sitting on nearly 500 acres of secluded forest and farmland, you will be alone with the deer, turkey, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, bobcats, coyotes and birds. This property is part of Indiana's Classified Forests and Wildlands Program, which helps to promote timber production, watershed protection and wildlife habitat management on private lands. The Indian-Kentuck Creek at the bottom of the property offers fine fishing. The manor is less than nine miles from downtown Madison (10 miles from Kroger, Wal-Mart or Lowes), The house was built by Orbin Ash Jr., who used timbers taken from three log cabins.

    General Butler State Resort Park Carrollton

    • This Kentucky State Resort is 13.5 miles from Madison, near Carrollton, Kentucky. It offers 24 cottages or cabins for year-round rental. Each cabin provides a private balcony or patio, and you have the option of either a one-, two- or three-bedroom house. The standard cottages have only one bath, but if you upgrade to one of the three executive cabins, you get two baths. All tableware, cooking utensils and linens are supplied, including a fresh set of linens available daily. The cabins are available in the late afternoon, and checkout is at 11 a.m. the next morning. Pets are not allowed, but an exception is made for service dogs. A nine-hole golf course is in the park.
