Townsend, Tennessee, is a tiny mountain village surrounded by the famous Great Smoky Mountains. The population was only 244 as of the 2000 census, but this is a village used to having many more people around as it is one of three towns considered a \"gateway\" to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are many rental cabins available around the Townsend area for visitors year-round.
Old Smoky Mountain Cabins offer a wide variety of cabins, even naming some after the immediate outdoor view surrounding them. There are cabins that are right on the edge of cliffs that offer spectacular views of the surrounding Smoky Mountains, and others are right by a creek. The owners also have a petting zoo for the kids, and the location is within driving distance of popular caves and tubing areas. Amenities include air conditioning/heating and fully stocked kitchens.

Dogwood Cabins are located right in the Smoky Mountains, and these come with a wide array of modern amenities that might make the cabin camping transition a little easier for visitors who aren't as comfortable just leaving all of society behind. Timberwinds Log Cabin Resort offers one-, two-, three- and three-and-one-half-bedroom cabins to tourists. The Timberwinds cabins are luxury log cabins, which provide large spaces and amenities. The individual cabins are secluded, several of which have outdoor hot tubs or Jacuzzis and billiard tables indoors. There is a private pool that only renters at Timberwinds can use, as well as a public picnic area close by. There are several golf courses in the area, in addition to hiking trails, music festivals and historical sites.
