Cabins are a great way to enjoy a vacation in Michigan's Mackinaw area because they are less rustic than a tent but closer to nature than a hotel room. The Mackinaw area includes locations near the Mackinac Bridge, which connects Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. There are cabins available on either side of the bridge, as well as on Mackinac Island near the bridge in Lake Huron.
Mill Creek Campground, just east of Mackinaw City in the Lower Peninsula, offers rental cabins along the Straits of Mackinac and near the lake. The cabins along the lake shore and some near the lake include a bathroom, while others closest to the campground do not. Guests use the campground's public restrooms. All cabins sleep six people, with a combination of queen beds, single beds or bunk beds. Some are a large, one-floor building, while others have a second-floor loft. Economy cabins are one-room buildings that sleep four to six people in one room. They are the most rustic options. The cabins have an indoor eating area as well as an outdoor picnic table and fire pit. The more rustic cabins, those without running water, cost less to rent. Rates depend on the day and time of year. They cost more than a traditional campsite, but less than hotel rooms for six people. The cabins are all made of wood. Mill Creek Campground has an on-site camp store, heated pool and playground.
Cabin rentals on the Upper Peninsula side of the Mackinaw area include the Mackinaw Cabin and the Sunset Lodge. Both are full-sized cabins available for weekly rentals. They sleep six people. The Mackinaw Cabin is just west of St. Ignace, the city on the north end of the Mackinac Bridge. The cabin includes a private Lake Michigan beach and is available for rental during summers. A view of the Mackinac Bridge and St. Helen Island are features of this secluded and wooded location. The Sunset Lodge is more of a cottage-style structure and is located in St. Ignace on Lake Michigan. The wooden walls are painted white. This rental includes the main cottage and the small Moonlight Cabin on the beach. Both Mackinaw Cabin and Sunset Lodge feature full kitchens with appliances, dining rooms, living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms. Reservations should be made in advance and rates range from $900 to $1,300 per week.
There are six cabins/cottages available for rental on Mackinac Island. They provide more intimate lodging than the hotels and bed and breakfasts on the island. Any luggage and items that guests bring must be able to be transported first by ferry, then on foot or horse and buggy, because there is no automobile traffic allowed on the island. Different size cabins allow for a couple or larger group to stay together. The cabins include: Casa Verano Cottage, Dreamcatcher Cottage, Ingleneuk, McGreevy Cottage, Serendipity Cottage and Woods Charmer Cottage.
