Pros & Cons of Purchasing Timeshares

Timeshares can be a wonderful adventure in travel if you make the purchase wisely and view it as a vacation home. The downside is typically financial, and it's good to know when to sell.

  1. Pros

    • Timeshares are wonderful vacation homes that allow you to travel to different parts of the world you would not normally consider or be able to afford. .

    Cost Advantage

    • Timeshares are cheaper than hotels. You typically stay in a one- or two-bedroom condo, and it is literally more for your money. Plus, you save money by eating some of your meals in your timeshare, as partial or full kitchens are typically provided.

    Fees and Other Difficulties

    • Timeshare maintenance fees go up yearly, special assessments are levied, and timeshares can be difficult to rent or exchange.

    Resale

    • Timeshares are difficult to sell. You almost never recover your initial expenditure when you sell unless you have owned it for so long and used it so frequently that it has paid for itself. That is not the case for most people, however.

    Considerations

    • If you cannot justify the expense of the timeshare by using it each year, the cost is not cheaper in the long run, and your timeshare can be more of a hardship than a joy.
