Pros & Cons of Owning a Moped

With the high cost of gas you may consider other methods of transportation. Many people think that mopeds are the answer. However, it is important to explore the pros and cons of owning a moped before buying one.
  1. Pro: Cost

    • A 50 cc moped can get 100 mpg. Compared to most cars that can only get 35 mpg, this makes a moped extremely fuel efficient. Purchasing a moped is often cheaper than buying a car. Used ones sell from about $600 to $1000 (as of 2011).

    Pro: Environmentally Friendlier

    • As fuel efficiency is better in a moped than a car, there will be less pollution generated. Also, because mopeds are small, it is easier to drive between cars instead of wasting time and gasoline stuck in traffic.

    Con: Top Speeds

    • Unfortunately, most mopeds only have a top speed of 40 mph. Mopeds are generally better for short commutes.

    Con: Dangers

    • Mopeds have a greater risk of being hit on the road, as car drivers may not always see you. Weather conditions can also pose as a danger to these lightweight, exposed-to-the-elements vehicles.
