According to Moped2.org, moped riders in Georgia are required to be at least 15 years old. While a motorcycle license isn't required, moped riders must have a valid driver's license or learner's permit. Any driver of a two or three-wheeled vehicle with an engine bigger than 50 cc may have to take additional testing to get a motorcycle license. In Georgia, the test for the class M motorcycle license requires a minimum age of 17 with parental consent or 18 without.
The Georgia Department of Driver Services states that it is illegal to operate a moped without a helmet. Furthermore, the helmet must be a motorcycle-approved helmet, not a bicycle helmet. However, on actual bicycles powered by motors, a properly fitting bicycle helmet is all that is required. Georgia law considers it a moving violation to be without a helmet on a moped. Those in violation typically get tickets, though repeated offenses or other moving violations may lead to a suspended license.
Moped owners of Georgia do not have to register their vehicle. According to Moped2.org, mopeds require no registration or titling within the state of Georgia. As such, they do not require license plates or tags. The only time you'll have to go in to the Department of Driver Services is to get your driver's license to operate the moped, if you don't have one already.
If a moped rider in Georgia meets the previously mentioned specifications and requirements, they can drive their moped on the road. In Georgia, mopeds are not allowed on limited access highways or any road with a speed limit greater than 35 mph. Moped riders may not ride more than two abreast. Aside from those exceptions, moped riders must follow the same laws other motorists follow.
