Rules for Dogs at Beaches

Most dogs love water and enjoy frolicking at the beach as much as people do. Unwind near the shores and soak up some sunshine with your favorite pooch without breaking any laws. City and state beaches enforce many rules and regulations for pets -- if pets are allowed at all. The rules are in place to provide safety for all beach visitors including animals.
  1. Pet Policy

    • Beaches have different policies regarding pets on the beach. While some beaches do not permit dogs at all, others allow dogs to be on the premises with some restrictions. Check the pet regulations for a beach area you plan to visit before bringing your pet. Pet policies may change or apply to certain areas of the beach but not others.

    Leash Law

    • Dogs permitted on the beach usually must be leashed with proper identification attached to their collar. In Dewey Beach, Del., dogs must have a Dewey Beach dog license and must adhere to the leash law at all times. If you want to let your dog run loose, look for designated areas where unleashed dogs are allowed. Dogs are permitted -- leashed or unleashed -- anytime at Dog Beach near Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island in Mission Bay. Bring the leash in case you must control your dog -- and always clean up after your pet. Some cities require maximum and minimum leash lengths.

    Time Frame

    • Dogs may be allowed at the beach during specific periods and seasons. Familiarize yourself with the time regulations so you can still bring your dog to the beach -- if only during early mornings and evenings. In Laguna Beach, Calif., dogs are prohibited on city beaches except from June 1 through Sept. 16 -- and even then, before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. Dogs are allowed anytime from Sept. 17 to May 31 in Laguna Beach.

    Considerations

    • Bring sufficient drinking water for you and your pet if bringing your dog to the beach. The heat can be extreme -- especially during the summer months -- and may cause dehydration and fatigue. Just like you, your pet can become dehydrated from extreme heat. Always keep your dog's medical records -- especially its vaccination and rabies shots -- updated.
