The Walt Whitman Bridge is a suspension bridge with seven traffic lanes. The part of it suspended from cables weighs 36,500 tons. Construction started in 1953, and the bridge opened to traffic in 1957. It is owned by the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA).
The standard toll for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, sport utility vehicles and trucks up to 7,000 lbs. is $4, cash only. Only passenger vehicles are eligible for the senior discount.
Senior citizens, those 65 and older, can participate in the DRPA's Senior Discount Program through the E-ZPass program. Senior citizens must establish an account through the New Jersey E-ZPass Customer Service Center and submit a DRPA Senior Discount Program Application. As of September 2010, the discounted toll is $2.
