Trucks can not exceed weight and clearance limits on state highways and bridges. The standard weight limit for trucks is 80,000 pounds. For any truck tractor or semi-trailer, the weight that comes down on a single axle cannot exceed 20,000 pounds, and cannot exceed 34,000 for a tandem axle. Drivers have to stay within the limits the bridge was designed to bear. Clearances stand at 14 feet from the ground.
The state can change the limits for a bridge to weights above or below the standard, especially if weak or damaged. The law also allows clearance changes if the state posts the limit. Truck drivers have to look for signs posted within 500 feet.
The standard speed limit for passing over a bridge is 55 miles per hour. For any bridge, the state can lower the speed limit to protect the safety of the bridge structure. Under the law, limits cannot be lower than 5 miles per hour. Signs near the bridge display the reduced speed limits.
Counties or cities can make rules for bridges in their area by passing ordinances. The rules do not have to follow the state law, but Caltrans (California Department of Transportation) approves the local rules. Once approved, the local authority posts new rules at the bridge.
Lower limits, or higher, that preserve bridge safety can exist in any particular locality. When a bridge needs repair, a temporary reduction lasts up to 90 days. The local authorities can even prohibit use of the bridge by heavy trucks. But trucks making deliveries can use a bridge, as can public utility trucks owned by a public utility or a licensed contractor.
When a truck driver causes damage to a bridge while violating a weight maximum or other law, the driver takes on liability for the damage. If the driver drove the truck with the permission of an owner, the government can ask both to pay. The government can bring a suit in civil court to collect the amounts.
Caltrans makes rules and regulations for toll bridges to control the traffic. Toll booth traffic has to flow and remain orderly. Truck drivers passing through read the signs for the bridge rules. Any driver can request a copy of the laws, rules and regulations at the toll booth.
