How to Troubleshoot Electric Mopeds

Electric Mopeds are good for the environment. They are quiet, do not rely on gasoline and all you need to do is plug them into an electrical outlet, charge up the battery, and off you go. Problems that occur are usually quick fixes--whether they are with the drive-belt, fuse, or battery charger, they are usually relatively minor. If the Moped is dropped, or more extensive damage occurs, have a qualified mechanic take a look at it. Otherwise, here are a few basic troubleshooting steps you can run through on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply power to the throttle and see if the rear wheel spins. If it does not, it may have a missing or loose drive belt or chain.

    • 2

Check the drive belt if you hear a grinding noise coming from the rear of the Moped. The chain may be too loose or too tight. Loosen up the nuts on the back axle and shift the wheel backward or forward to adjust the chain until it is seated correctly. Tighten the nuts after you are finished.

    • 3

If the brakes are not working, adjust the brake wire. Loosen the nut located approximately one inch from the end of the brake wire, near the back wheel. Loosen the wire by gripping the brake handle on the handlebar. Pull the wire with a pair of pliers to adjust it. Once it is tight enough, tighten the nut.

    • 4

If the lights do not work under battery power, check the fuse while the Moped is not moving. Unscrew the cap to the fuse holder to see if the thin metal strip is broken. Replace with another fuse of the exact same amperage. If the lights do not work when you plug the Moped into the charger, then it most likely is not the fuse that is the problem. Inspect the fuse holder for any cracks or damage and replace if necessary.

    • 5

Replace the charger if the Moped will not charge even after eight hours of charging. All the charging lights should be lit to indicate a full charge.

    • 6

Replace the throttle if the Moped begins to move when you turn the ignition on without turning the throttle. Have a qualified mechanic do this for you.

    • 7

Check the ignition switch if the Moped does not run and the lights do not work when under battery power or when plugged into the charger. Open up the panel beneath the ignition switch and connect the two wires to each other. If the Moped now operates, the problem is either a bad connection or the switch is no good.
