What Classifies As a Moped?

Mopeds are lightweight and low-powered types of motorcycles. In power and appearance, mopeds seem to be a bridge between bicycles and motor scooters.
  1. Design

    • Originally, mopeds were simply bicycles with gas-powered motor attachments. Modern models more closely resemble motorcycles. Mopeds may feature two or three wheels.

    Power

    • The engine of a typical moped is less than 50 cc; in contrast, a motor scooter has an engine larger than 50 cc. In most cases, mopeds are limited to a top speed of 30 mph. Some modified mopeds are capable of reaching speeds up to 60 mph.

    Restrictions

    • Due to their potential speeds, mopeds are generally banned from bike paths and sidewalks. They may be too slow to use on roads where the speed limit is higher than 30 mph.
