Retreats, Resorts & Ranches in Texas

Ranching is a way of life in Texas. Cattle roam the pasturelands and cowboys are still keeping the herds roped in and on the range. Several ranches, retreats and resorts offer guests a chance to slip on some boots and be a part of the Texas culture. Horseback riding, hiking, cattle roping and relaxing are a way to get back to nature and experience what life is like as a native.
  1. Running-R Ranch

    • Guests can ride horses in Hill Country State Natural Area.

      Established on an old cattle ranch, the Running-R Ranch is 62 miles from San Antonio. The 230-acre property butts up against Hill Country State Natural Area with 5,400 acres of open land. Guests are invited to ride the horses two hours a day around the ranch, or along the trails of the state park.

      Fourteen different sized cabins are on the ranch for small to large parties. Each cabin has a seating area as well as a refrigerator. The cabins are decorated with handmade cedar post furniture.

      A buffet style breakfast and lunch is served in the lodge every day, which is open 24 hours fa day, for games of pool, watching satellite TV or sitting around the brick fireplace. A swimming pool is on the property.

      For dinnertime, the town of Bandera is five miles away with plenty of restaurants. The Bandera Star Steakhouse is located in town, serving steaks, soups and sandwiches as well as Busbee's BBQ & Catering. Busbee's serves barbecue and hamburgers.

    Lajitas Golf Resort and Spa

    • The resort sits on the edge of Big Bend National Park.

      Down next to the Mexican border, on the edge of the Big Bend National and State Parks, the Lajitas Golf Resort and Spa offers guests a variety of leisure activities. The par-72 Black Jack's Crossing Golf Course is on site as well as the Agave Spa. Hunting, shooting and an equestrian center are all a part of the 27-000-acre resort.

      Views of the Rio Grande River and the Lajitas mountains are all a part of the beauty at the resort. The rooms are decorated in a cowboy motif and are equipped with a DVD player, cable TV, free bottled water, in-room safes and wireless Internet. Some rooms have a fireplace.

      Although breakfasts are not complimentary, meals are served each day at the Candelilla Cafe, featuring gourmet southwestern fare.

    Crier Creek, Pine Cove Retreat Center

    • The Christian retreat center, Crier Creek, is located approximately 70 miles west of Houston. The center has 20 cabins with a country decor. A private bath is in each cabin as well as a refrigerator, coffeemaker and microwave. Bed linens are provided. Guests must bring their own towels and toiletries.

      Three meeting rooms on are site with presentation set-ups, including microphones, speakers and projection screens. There is plenty to do on the 700-acre property. Guests can take part in horseback riding, a zip line, volleyball, foosball, ping pong, hiking, or just sit around the campfire.

      Three meals are served every day at the Whitetail Lodge Dining Hall. A coffee shop and gift shop are on the site.

    Beaumont B Ranch

    • The Beaumont B Ranch is a working cattle ranch.

      The Beaumont B Ranch is just outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area and is an 800-acre working cattle ranch and spa. The bed and breakfast on the ranch has a variety of rooms, which include a coffeemaker, wireless Internet, a DVD player and TV. A pull-chain toilet, claw-foot bathtub and an antique iron stove are in some of the rooms.

      A complimentary breakfast for two is served in the Branding Room. Biscuits and gravy, waffles, sausage and much more are on the menu. A buffet-style lunch with barbecue, hamburgers, chicken and other items are available six days a week. The Branding Room is closed on Mondays.

      Trail rides, cattle drives, cattle herding, chuck wagon meals by reservation, roping lessons and a weekly Friday fish fry are all on site at the Beaumont B Ranch.

      The Beau Monde Spa offers facials, massages and a body polish for those wanting to relax.
