German Restaurants in Northern California

Many visitors are attracted to Northern California for its natural characteristics such as redwood forests and beaches with rugged, rocky outcrops. Others come to the area primarily because of San Francisco and its many attractions such as cable cars and the Golden Gate Bridge. Northern California is also home to many dining options of different origins. German food has a strong presence here, with prominent restaurants in San Fransisco, Alameda and other cities.
  1. Schroeder's

    • Schroeder's German restaurant has been a San Fransisco tradition since it opened in 1893. The earthquake of 1906 destroyed the restaurant and it has moved to a number of different locations over the years. The restaurant serves traditional German fare. Its lunch menu consists of favorites like the frankfurter sandwich, German meatloaf sandwich, wiener schnitzel, veal stroganoff and more. Most entrees are served with German potato salad or coleslaw, German bread and butter and fresh steamed vegetables. The dinner menu is a bit more expansive, featuring appetizers of ethnic fare, including a sausage platter or German potato pancakes. Some of the most popular dinner options at Schroeder's include the jager schnitzel, traditional German sauerbraten and Hungarian goulash. The restaurant also features both imported and domestic beers.

    Suppenkuche

    • Suppenkuche is German restaurant in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. The restaurant was opened in 1993 by former Munich graphic designer Fabrizio Wiest. Suppenkuche is open from 5 until 10 p.m. every night for dinner; and for brunch from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Brunch features omelletes, sausages, eggs, pancakes and meatloaf. Among the most popular dinner entrees are German ravioli, pickled herring, porkloin, beef, venison medallions, meatloaf and pork chops. Suppenkuche also features an impressive variety of wines and beers imported from Germany.

    Speisekammer

    • Speisekammer is a German restaurant in Alameda that has been open since 2002. It is open for lunch and dinner every day except Monday. The bar at Speisekammer features happy hour specials Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The lunch menu features entrees such as potato pancakes, grilled sausages and sauerkraut, smoked trout and bread dumpling. A kids' menu offers smaller dishes of fried pork cutlet, mini sausages, a German take on macaroni and cheese and potato pancakes. The dinner menu is complete with salads, appetizers and full-scale entrees. Some of the featured entrees include pork sausages, rotisserie chicken and grilled salmon. In light of current economic circumstances, Speisekammer also boasts a "recession menu," which features half portions of the restaurant's most popular dishes.
