Spa Treatments for at-Home

Get away from it all with relaxing spa treatments right in your own home. For a fraction of the cost of expensive spa products, you can make your own at home. Make them ahead of time for a weekend of relaxation, or embellish the container and give as a gift. Then all you need to do is put on some soothing music, light a few candles and indulge.
  1. Bath

    • Relax in a luxury rose bath.

      Pamper yourself with a spa bath. In a small bowl, mix 2 cups Epsom salt with 4 to 5 drops rose essential oil (more or less to your taste). Add to a hot running bath. Scatter rose petals from one rose (or more) in the water. Dim the lights, light the candles, get in and relax.

      To feel like the queen of the Nile simply mix up Cleopatra's milk bath. Mix 2 cups powdered milk (dry), 1 tablespoon dried orange peel, 2 teaspoons dried lavender flowers and 2 teaspoons dried rosemary. Put the mixture into a clear glass bottle. Pour 1/2 cup in bath and enjoy.

    Exfoliate with scrubs

    • Scrubs will soften skin while showering.

      Want to soften up elbows, heels and any rough or dry area? Make up some aromatic scrubs that will smell wonderful while softening skin. A sugary scrub is made with 1 cup each of brown sugar, raw oatmeal and olive oil. Apply to dry skin with hands in circular motions while standing in shower. Then rinse.

      Make a wake-up scrub for morning showers. It offers aroma therapy as well as a a traditional treatment used in Thai and Balinese spas. Using a fork, blend 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 1 cup pure turbinado sugar, 15 drops peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita), and 1/2 cup used coffee grounds from a freshly brewed pot of coffee. Store in jar with wide mouth. Apply in circular motion while showering starting at the feet and working up.

    Puffy eyes be gone

    • Cucumbers reduce puffy eyes.

      There are many spa treatments to reduce puffy, irritated eyes. Pour ice-cold whole milk into a small bowl. Then soak two cotton balls in the milk. Squeeze out the cotton balls and put on closed eyelids. When the cotton balls warm up, repeat.

      For a classic cucumber remedy jst place 1/2 inch slice of cold cucumber on each eyelid and relax for 15 minutes. Cucumbers contain vitamin c and caffeic acid which reduces swelling.

    Aromatherapy

    • Make your own spray aromatherapy.

      Your room can smell like a luxury spa with aromatherapy. Make homemade sprays to mist on your hair and skin, your pillowcase, or all around the room. Fill a clean mini spray bottle with 4 ounces of distilled water. If you want a revitalizing spray, use a dropper to add 1 drop eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), 2 drops geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), and 3 drops peppermint (Mentha piperita). Or if you prefer a soothing, calming spray, drop in 2 drops bergamot (Citrus bergamia), 1 drop frankincense (Boswellia carteri), and 3 drops lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). Close the bottle and shake. Then just spray and enjoy.
