Long ago, Yosemite National Park gained a reputation as a major natural attraction. The park has remarkable biodiversity, scenic vistas and a park staff that preserves its history and beauty. Designated a World Heritage Site, Yosemite totals nearly 800,000 acres in east central California. If you intend to visit the park, be aware that there are unique trails and tours designed for horseback riding. Though the bicycle paths and routes for trams and shuttle buses are off-limits, the park also provides structured trails for stock use. Make a reservation for any tour well in advance.
Two-hour horseback tours cost $60, half-day tours $80 and full-day tours $119. Custom tours are more expensive, but offer greater flexibility.
Tuolumne Meadows Stables tours use the most arduous of the horseback riding trails, but also the only ones that travel the high country. The two-hour tour focuses on the high country, providing views of the Cathedral Range (which gets its name from its spire-like peaks) and the Mammoth Peaks. Half-day and full-day tours more fully explore this part of the park.
On the Yosemite Valley trails, you will see the most well-known sections of the park. Valley Stables' half-day tour challenges riders with steep slopes and difficult terrain and is only recommended for fit, experienced riders. The two-hour tour is less strenuous and goes by the edge of picturesque Mirror Lake.
Wawona Stables tours are historically-themed and relaxed. The half-hour tour traces the paths of 19th Century pioneers. Tour guides explain some of the challenges pioneers faced while driving their wagons through this area of California. The half-hour tour crosses level terrain and is suited for less experienced riders.
Yosemite's custom multi-day trips come at a steep price. For $270 a day, an expert guide will lead a personalized tour, using mules that carry up to 150 lbs. of supplies. These "pack and saddle" tours are the ideal way to experience a weekend in Yosemite National Park. A wilderness permit from the state of California is necessary to take one of these tours.
