Talimena State Park marks the entrance of the Talimena Scenic By-Way, offering 54 miles of road weaving through the wooded terrain. The park is known for its colorful foliage in the spring and fall, and is also close to lakes, hiking and backpacking trails. Dirt bikes and ATVs are permitted. RV sites include water and electricity, and access to the comfort station with showers. Additional facilities include a playground, picnic tables and group shelters.

Horse Heaven Ranch Resort in Talihina, Oklahoma has over thirty RV sites overlooking the mountains and forest. Many spots are spacious enough for horse trailers and oversized motorhomes. Costs cover two adults, three children and two horses. Two piped pens come with each RV site for equines, and box stalls are also available. Hookups generally include water, electricity and sewer. Visitors are encouraged to luxuriate in the air conditioned/heated Horse Heaven bathhouse. The ranch also offers hundreds of miles of well-maintained trails snaking through the Winding Stair Mountains for hiking and horseback riding. Reservations can be made in advance, though a deposit is required.

Talking Trees is only seven miles from the Talimena By-way, settled within the Winding Stair and Rich Mountains. This campground keeps visitors busy with easy access to hiking, mountain biking, horse and ATV trails. Archeological and cultural enthusiasts will also appreciate the nearby Spiro Mounds, Runestone State Park and Choctaw National Capital Museum. Thirty and 50 amp RV hookups have water and electricity, while a full 30/50 amp site meters electricity and includes sewer. Campers can feast on meals available for purchase at the Pine Cone Mess Hall, or relax after a long hike with a professional massage. With notice, a shuttle service is available to transport hikers or bikers to trail heads in the area. Farriers are also available for horse needs.

Big Cedar RV Park and Cabins is a family-run enterprise found within the Kiamichi River Valley, between Kiamichi and Winding Stair mountains. The park lies south of the Talimena National Scenic Byway, towards the western end. Camp spaces can accommodate large rigs, and offer easy entry. Full hookups include water, electricity, sewer, cable and Wi-Fi. With each reservation, campers also gain access to the bathhouse, showers, and coin-operated laundry. Night fees are based on double occupancy, and small charges apply for additional people and 50 amp service. Ice is available for purchase, but Big Cedar recommends that campers stock up on additional supplies before entering. While small grocers are nearby, the location is relatively remote. Cedar Lake is found within the Ouachita National Forest, and its campground is run by the Oklahoma Rangers of the US Forest Service. Roads are paved. Twenty five RV sites have water and electricity hookups, and 7 also include sewer. 30 and 50 amp service is available at all sites. The campground also offers warm showers and fair fees for camping. Fishing from the 90-acre Cedar Lake is especially good, as is wildlife viewing, swimming and hiking throughout the area. Reservations can be made ten days in advance.
