Handgun Carry in Tennessee State Parks: Permit Rules and Restrictions

Current Law (TCA 39-17-1351, 11-3-106)

Valid enhanced carry permit holders MAY carry handguns in Tennessee state parks with specific exceptions:

Prohibited Locations Within Parks

• Within 100 ft of swimming areas, playgrounds, picnic areas.
• Inside ANY park building/facility (visitor centers, restrooms, offices, cabins) unless authorized by park manager/commissioner.
• While hunting or target shooting (separate regulations apply).

Additional Restrictions

• Loaded firearms prohibited in parks (TCA 39-17-1307)—handgun must be unloaded unless actively carried under permit.
• Long guns (rifles/shotguns) generally prohibited except hunting seasons.
• Federal facilities on park land (e.g., some dams) follow federal law—prohibited.

Permit Types

• Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit (EHCP): 8-hr training, allows park carry.
• Concealed Handgun Carry Permit (CHCP): 90-min online only; NOT valid for park carry.

Best Practice

Carry permit + ID always. Know park boundaries. Check TSP website for alerts. When in doubt, leave firearm secured in vehicle trunk (legal without permit).
