How did Sequoia National Park get its name?
The park is named for the giant sequoia tree, which is only found in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. These trees are the largest living things on Earth and can grow over 300 feet tall and 30 feet in diameter. The giant sequoia was discovered by a Euro-American in 1852, and it was quickly recognized as a unique and valuable resource. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation that created the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees, which became the core of Sequoia National Park. The park was later expanded to include other groves of giant sequoias, and it was renamed Sequoia National Park in 1890.
