First white man to visit the area of Alaska?

The first European explorer to visit Alaska was the Russian explorer Vitus Bering in 1741. He was in the service of the Russian Empire and led an expedition on two ships, the Saint Peter and the Saint Paul, through the Bering Strait and into the Gulf of Alaska. Bering died during the expedition and is buried on what is now known as Bering Island.
