The James J. Hill House is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in Minnesota and one of the best-preserved examples of Gilbert's work. The exterior is constructed of red sandstone and limestone, with a steep mansard roof and numerous dormers. The interior features a grand staircase, a library, a ballroom, and a conservatory.
The mansion is currently owned by the Minnesota Historical Society and operates as a museum. The museum includes exhibits on Hill's life and career, as well as on the history of the mansion and its architecture. Visitors can tour the mansion's numerous rooms, including the kitchen, servants' quarters, and Hill's private office.
