Birch Bay, just to the south of the Canadian border, has a secret. The largest tidal flat in Washington State lies there and bakes in the sun. As a result, you'll find the warmest and safest of waters in the Pacific Northwest.
There are two cottages available for rental here, Lora's Cottage and Seashell Cottage. Both cottages are well appointed with the latest appliances. You won't be bored here despite the privacy. You can watch chocolates being crafted in the village, enjoy freshly baked cinnamon rolls and have a mile of pristine beach to explore.
There are six rustic cottages available for rent in Silver Lake Park, and according to the County Parks Department website it is one of the Northwest's premier camping parks. Silver Lake Park is just south of the Canadian border on the edge of the Mount Baker National Recreation Area.
Be prepared to rough it a little if you choose to stay here, however. Though equipped with heaters and stoves, there is only cold water and the showers and toilets are in a separate restroom. You also need to take along your own cooking utensils and bedding. You can hire canoes or rowboats or bring your own.
There are six luxury cabins available for rental all year round close to the Mount Baker Ski Area. These cabins are all privately owned and include gas and wood fireplaces, satellite television, wireless Internet and private hot tubs. You can also use tennis courts and swimming pools, weather permitting.
There are plenty of activities to indulge in the immediate area, including snowboarding, downhill and cross country skiing in winter, mountain biking, river rafting, hiking, climbing and kayaking in warm weather. The cabins are a three-minute drive from the town of Glacier, where there are restaurants, a bakery and other retail outlets.
