How to Rent a Cabin in the Adirondacks

The Adirondack mountains in northeastern New York state comprise the largest wilderness area in the eastern U.S. This sparsely populated 9,375 square-mile region is bigger than the neighboring state of Vermont. It contains an estimated 2,000 square miles of hiking trails as well as 3,000 lakes and ponds, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Within the High Peaks region sits New York's highest point, Mt. Marcy. The area is bounded by the Tug Hill Plateau and St. Lawrence River in the west and Lake Champlain and Lake George in the east. Cabin rentals abound in numerous locations throughout this vast region.

Determine the season in which you'd like to visit. Winter and summer are the peak seasons in the Adirondacks. However, autumn and spring can be great times to visit, with brilliant foliage in the autumn and blossoming flowers in the spring. Additionally, rates may be lower during these times. If you know exactly which dates you would like to go, jot them down on a sheet of paper to have handy for reference.

Consider the activities you'd like to pursue. Hiking, fishing, boating, skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing are common pastimes in the Adirondacks. Knowing how you want to spend your trip will help narrow down what part of the Adirondacks in which you should look for cabins. For instance, if you want to canoe or kayak, consider the Raquette River or Saranac Lake. If you are a downhill skier, the Olympic town of Lake Placid is an excellent choice; also consider North Creek or Weverton, which are near Gore Mountain Ski Resort. And the Old Forge area is a popular destination for snowmobilers.

Determine the size of your party. Cabins prices increase with size. For just two or three people, a studio-style or one-bedroom cabin will work. For four or more people, you'll want to look into two-bedroom or larger cabins.

Open a search engine and type in, "Adirondack cabin rental." Alternatively, if you've determined a specific area within the Adirondacks that you would like to visit, type the name of that town into the search engine along with the words "cabin rental." For instance, you may type "Old Forge Cabin Rental."

Filter the results according to your previously defined parameters. In the Old Forge area, which also includes Eagle Bay, Inlet and Big Moose, consider Julie Liddle's Adirondack Vacation Rental Homes. In the High Peaks area, encompassing Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, look into Adirondack Vacations. This is not to be confused with the similarly-named Adirondack Vacation Rentals, which lists properties throughout the entire region, sorted by county. Simply click a listing for further details.

Contact the owner via phone or email once you've found a cabin you're interested in. Ask any relevant questions not noted on the website, such as whether towels and bed linens are included or whether pets are permitted. Once you're ready to book, you will probably need to provide your credit card number and contact information.
