Great Travel Ideas

Most people work to survive, but many vacation to thrive. Some travel to the tropics, while others make visits to family and friends. Great travel ideas are just a click of the mouse away from being reality, if you can foot the bill. While some great travel ideas may come down to affordability, one should never sacrifice enjoyability --- especially since the average person gets only 5 percent (two weeks) of the year to do it.
  1. Cruises

    • Cruises are a great way to travel on a budget. You'll be whisked, or floated rather, to tourist hot spots such as Hawaii, the Bahamas and Cozumel, Mexico --- with food, sleeping accommodations and entertainment all inclusive. The large cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Carnival have massive ships with water slides, basketball courts, swimming pools, comedy clubs, dance clubs, all-you-can-eat meals and even on-board casinos to keep your fun meter revved up.

With deals and discounts available through travel agencies and a cruise line's website, you can score a seven-day cruise for about $100 per day (as of April 2011) --- a great travel idea for families on a budget, businesses looking to throw a company get-away or anyone who wants to travel with everything taken care of for them.

    The Tropics

    • Millions of Americans race for the tropics each year to satisfy their travel desires. If you're new to this kind of travel, start with U.S. destinations such as South Florida, Hawaii or Puerto Rico. The English-speaking and tourist-friendly accommodations will make your travel enjoyable.

As you become well versed in tropical travel, you may want to do a little Island hopping. Start with the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. These islands understand how important travel is to their economies and will welcome you. Just remember it's always safe to remain close to the hotel when the sun goes down, as many of these islands are still considered Third World.

Finally, if you are adventurous, visit remote islands such as Tahiti or Atui in the South Pacific (Indonesia) or central America destinations such as Costa Rica, Panama, Cancun or Cozumel.

    Major Tourist Destinations

    • If you want pictures in front of famous monuments, marquee squares and inspiring architecture, travel to Europe. Start with the famous monuments in Rome, make your way through France to see the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Elysee and the Louvre, the famous art museum in which the "Mona Lisa" is displayed. Architecture enthusiast will love Budapest and western Europe in general for its incredible collection of Baroque and Gothic period structures.

If your budget requires you to stay on this side of the pond, visit New York --- Manhattan, specifically --- for great food, famous bridges and buildings and Times Square, home of the New Year's Eve ball drop. If you're interested in the outdoors, the West Coast has a whole slew of destinations including Yosemite National Park, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, the Big Sur coastline and Lake Tahoe.

    International

    • Western Europe has been covered, but don't forget about Asia and South America. If you're looking for a distinctly cultural immersion, including dancing, tasty foods, ancient ruins and the romanticists' favorite language --- Spanish --- look no further than South America. You can start with Argentina and Brazil if you're interested in sticking with well-developed countries and branch out from there to visit the west coast locations such as Chile and Peru to see vast Mayan ruins or the famous Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador.

You could travel for years in Asia and not see everything it has to offer, but starting with the Great Wall, the massive cities of Beijing and Shanghai, the Forbidden City, and the Terracotta warriors will certainly quench your thirst for travel and tourist attractions.
