How to Check Mail While Traveling

Checking your mail while you are on the road is possible, though the type of travel can dictate your options. For example, if you are traveling for only a week or so, you might only want to check email and leave physical mail until you get home. For long-term travel, you might want your physical mail sent to a postal service for pickup until you get home. Fortunately, options are available for mail and email.

Instructions

  1. Checking Email

    • 1

Carry your own laptop. The easiest way to check your email while you are traveling is through your own computer. A laptop can connect to wireless services, such as in a coffee shop or a hotel room, if the hotel offers Internet, so you can go to your email website, sign in and check your messages. If a laptop is not an option, go to the hotel business office or a cybercafé.

    • 2

Turn on the Internet option and go to the website for your email. Sign in and check your mail. Make sure to sign in with the "remember your password" box unchecked.

    • 3

Sign out. Never stay signed in to a computer that is not your personal computer. Other individuals who use the computer next can read your email, if you stay signed in.

    Physical Mail

    • 4

Call the hotel or hostel where you plan to stay and ask if they will hold mail for you. If you have a reservation, some hotels and hostels will accept mail and hold it until you arrive and pick it up.

    • 5

Call the local postal service in the area you plan to travel and see if they hold packages or letters. If they do, arrange for them to receive and hold mail. Keep in mind that some locations might charge a fee, so ask about their rates beforehand.

    • 6

Sign up for a forwarding service. If you are traveling in the United States, a forwarding service will forward mail to your planned-destination's postal office and allow you to pick it up as you pass by the area. This is possible only if you have a planned itinerary.

    • 7

Get friends, family or coworkers to send mail through a priority or first-class shipping option. The mail arrives within a day to a few days and is ideal if you need to receive something while staying in one area for one week or more.
