Report the passport lost or stolen by calling 877-487-2778 if you lose your passport while traveling within the United States. Alternately, complete Form DS-64, the State Department's statement regarding a lost or stolen passport.
Report the loss of the passport to the local police in the area where the loss occurred.
Contact the nearest American embassy or consulate if you lose your passport while traveling outside of the United States. Request the U.S. Citizen Services Department of the embassy or consulate. Make an appointment at the embassy as soon as possible.
Submit form DS-11 along with proof of U.S. citizenship, proof of identity (such as a driver's license), a photocopy of the identification document and two passport-sized photos to the embassy or consulate.
Pay the fee for a replacement passport.
Explain to the embassy/consulate staff any reasons for requesting to expedite the process of obtaining a new passport (such as already-made plans for continued travel). The embassy's staff members cannot promise to rush the process of replacing a lost passport, but they frequently do so.
Contact a visa expediter--many can be found online--who can often rush the process of replacing a lost passport.
