How Can I Replace a Lost Kazakh Passport?

Losing a passport and applying for a replacement can be a trying process, and replacement Kazakh passports are no exception. The Kazakhstan government has established procedures in place for verifying and replacing lost identity documents. While it is far easier to get a replacement passport if you still have your identity card, it's still possible to get a new passport if you have lost both your primary identity documents.
  1. If You Lost Your Passport But Have Your Identity Card

    • If you've lost your Kazakh passport but still have your Kazakhstan identity card, getting a replacement passport shouldn't be too hard. You will need to apply for a passport the same way you did originally: submit a citizen's registration book, your identity card and four passport-sized (3.5 x 4.5) photos, and then pay a fee of 5184 tenge. It normally takes 30 to 60 days (depending on where you live) to receive a new passport. (If applying for a child, you must include a parent's identity card and the child's birth certificate.)

If you are in urgent need of a new passport, you can pay a rush fee; the fee is on a sliding scale depending on how quickly you need it. Within five business days is 3447 tenge, 10 business days is 1173 tenge and 15 working days is 796 tenge.

If you are abroad and lose your passport, but have your identity card, you must submit your new passport application to the nearest Kazakhstan embassy. They will issue you a laissez-passer (temporary pass) and your new passport will be sent to your current place of residence in Kazakhstan.

If You Lost Your Passport and Your Identity Card

    • If you've lost both of your key identity documents--your passport and your identity card--then you'll need to report the loss to the government. Since someone could steal your identity if they obtain both of your identity documents, this becomes a matter of national security. If the loss happened in the midst of a move, you must report the loss to the police department at your new place of residence.

To begin the process, you must write a detailed letter to your local police department describing when, where and how your identity documents went missing. Include a house register and passport-sized photos of yourself. Be prepared to furnish birth, military or marriage certificates upon request to confirm your identity.

Within 10 days of receiving your notification of lost identity documents, a decision will be made as to whether to issue you new ones. In the meantime, you will be issued temporary identity papers. Provided it was an honest mistake on your part, or that they were stolen by someone else, approval will be granted and a new passport and identity card will be issued.

Should you lose both your identity documents while abroad, you must visit the nearest Kazakhstan embassy to report the loss and to request a temporary passport. Your new passport and card will be sent to your current residence in Kazakhstan.
