Think of the last time you remember having the passport. This will give you a starting point for the search.
Retrace your steps. Visit attractions and restaurants you frequented since the last time you saw your passport. Ask security or employees if a passport was turned in.
Call all hotels you stayed in since your passport vanished. It is possible that you left it behind in a hotel room.
Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you lost your passport overseas. Ask the concierge at your hotel or search the Internet for the address. You must visit in person to report it stolen.
Call the Bureau of Consular Affairs at the U.S. Department of State at 1-877-487-2778 to report the passport missing. Operators can help you from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Mondays to Fridays.
Download and fill out Form DS-64: Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen. Sign and mail the form to Passport Services at the U.S. Department of State.
Replace the passport by submitting a Form DS-64 and Form DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport in person at a passport agency.
