How to Report a Compromised Passport

Lost or stolen passports are more than an inconvenience, they can be a security threat as well. If your passport has been lost or stolen it should be reported to the State Department immediately. If you are traveling abroad, you will need to make your report to the nearest United States Embassy or Consulate. Once a passport has been reported as compromised, it is no longer a valid travel document, and a new one will need to be issued. The application process for obtaining a replacement in this case is identical to the process used to obtain a passport for the first time.

If your passport is lost while traveling abroad, you should report it to the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate right away. You will not be able to travel without it, so it is imperative that an embassy be contacted. The U.S. Embassy government website contains a complete list of embassies and their contact information throughout the world. Be prepared to show alternate forms of identification to expedite the process. For this reason, it is a good idea to carry one or more copies of your passport and other identification while traveling in case your originals are lost.

Once a passport is reported as lost or stolen, it is no longer a valid travel document whether the loss is reported domestically or while traveling. If you recover the passport after making a report to the State Department, you should notify them immediately, then send it to them. They will either stamp it as invalid and return it to you, or destroy it, whichever you prefer. Whatever you do, do not attempt to travel with it. Traveling with an invalid passport is illegal and you may run into trouble at customs.

If you find a passport it should be mailed to the Lost or Stolen address above immediately.
