The American Society for Testing and Materials International (ASTM International) has developed more than 1,500 standards that are utilized in more than 95 different countries. These standards relate to all different areas of the engineering field. Although it is a private corporation, several of its standards have been adopted as national standards in different countries worldwide.
The IOS also works in developing engineering standard, but the IOS does not work exclusively with engineering standards. The breadth of the IOS project means less energy is focused on international engineering standards.
This commission works to standardize electrical and electronic technology. Some international engineers in this field have chosen to follow the standards issued by the IEC.
Members of the European Union use standards that have been formed by a committee in the EU. The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is the major committee in charge of standardization in the EU. The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) was created as a subsection of the CEN to focus on engineering standards.
