Traveling abroad typically involves a long airline flight. An international flight can be exciting, but it can also be uncomfortable and boring. Take a few simple steps to prepare so that you will be comfortable and enjoy your upcoming international flight.
Plan ahead to get a good seat, and look at the seating chart to pick the best available seat. If you are tall, look for the row with the most legroom, typically the exit row. If you tend to use the restroom often, then sit close to the lavatory. Also the first-row seats in each section do not have under-the-seat storage, so luggage you place in the overhead bins maybe inconvenient to retrieve later.
Dress wisely by wearing layers on top so you can easily adapt to cold and hot temperatures. Select roomy, comfortable bottoms that are not too tight. A cotton short-sleeve shirt and zip-up sweater or jacket are the best options. For a very long flight, consider changing into sweats to wear to sleep so your clothes stay fresh.
Wear comfortable shoes. Feet tend to swell during a long flight. If you wear sandals, bring a pair of socks in case your feet get cold.
Bring entertainment. You have a long ride ahead, and it can seem even longer if you are bored. Pack plenty of things to keep busy, including magazines, books, crossword or word puzzles, playing cards, a small board game and portable music player. Also check out the in-flight movie and music offerings.
Pack essential medications and hygiene items in your carry-on bag. Bring a small supply of anything you may need during the international flight. Suggested items include pain reliever, heartburn or diarrhea medication, feminine hygiene supplies, toothbrush, toothpaste and lip balm. Include all of your prescription medications.
Make wise food and beverage choices. Now is not the time to experiment with new food or drinks, so avoid foods that cause you to get an upset stomach or heartburn. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. If you don't care for airline food, pack non-perishable nourishing snacks in your carry-on bag.
Get up and stretch. Take regular walks around the cabin to stretch your legs and keep your circulation flowing. Pay attention to the fasten seatbelt signs, and stay out of the way of the flight attendants and food carts. Also perform various stretches in your seat to prevent back discomfort.
