How to Tape a Flight Helmet

Flight helmets tend to come in flat paint styles. You can add some decoration to your flight helmet, along with a safety feature, by taping the helmet up with reflective tape. Beyond purchasing the reflective tape, you need only a standard straight edge razor or box cutter and your fingers to complete the rest of the project. With the right plan in place, you can start taping your helmet in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any accessories from the helmet before starting. Set these pieces aside so you can reattach them after you finish taping the helmet.

    • 2

Measure the length along the center of the helmet from front to back. Start where the forehead area of the helmet begins and measure back to where the helmet meets the nape of your neck.

    • 3

Cut a strip of the reflective tape to the length. Place one end of the strip of tape at the center of the forehead area on the helmet and place it vertically back to the neck area of the helmet. Take care that the strip is perfectly vertical. Use your fingernail to smooth out any creases or air bubbles in the tape.

    • 4

Measure the strip running along the right side of the strip of reflective tape you placed down the center of the helmet.

    • 5

Cut a strip to this length and apply it to the right of the center piece of tape. You should overlap the second piece of tape with the first piece of tape by about 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch.

    • 6

Continue to measure, cut and apply strips down the right side of the helmet. When you finish taping the right side of the helmet, then measure, cut and tape to the left of the center strip until the entire left side of the helmet is complete.
