Frequent Flyer Tips

Frequent flyers spend a lot of time in airports and on flights. Between standing in security lines and waiting to pick up your checked bags at the end of your trip, a frequent flyer can benefit from a few tips on how to make the next flight a smooth and successful one.
  1. Miles

    • Each airline offers its own frequent flyer program, which comes with different benefits and rewards. Select one with an airline that you will use most often and that flies to a majority of your desired destinations. If you join several programs, make sure that at least one of them allows you to consolidate your miles from other memberships, bringing you rewards faster. Make sure you read the fine print of your frequent flyer program to learn about any other ways you can accumulate miles, such as booking certain car rentals, hotel rooms or using a specific credit card. Check the status of your miles often to make sure they do not expire.

    Airport Security

    • Properly preparing for waiting in airport security lines can save you time. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises that you pack carry-on bags in layers to avoid unnecessary double-checking. Place electronics and personal items between layers of clothes to help security officers to more easily determine that your bag is not a risk. Make sure to follow all other TSA rules and guidelines such as keeping only 3-ounce bottles of liquid in a clear plastic bag. Wear clothing and shoes that you can easily remove. If at all possible, avoid checking baggage. This will save you time at the beginning and end of your trip as well as during connecting flights.

    Comfort

    • Quality in-flight entertainment options can be few and far between. Bring at least one diversion that does not require batteries or a power adapter, such as a book or magazine. A pair of headphones allow you to listen to music, and if the MP3 player or other device loses power, you can still use the headphones to signal your overly chatty seatmate that you are not interested in a conversation. If you bring a laptop, make sure you charge it before you leave, and pack it in a TSA-approved laptop bag for an easier trip through airport security. Take along a few extra snacks on shorter flights in case the airline does not offer a snack or the flight is too short for a full meal.
