West Palm Beach is home to a variety of water sports activities. Boating, fishing and surfing can be done in numerous locations. There are several fishing charters -- for a half day or full day -- available to take you and your party offshore to fish for tarpon, shark, sailfish and tuna. For those who want to pilot the boat themselves, there are a number of boats -- both fishing and recreational -- that can be rented to allow you to cruise the inlets around West Palm Beach or go offshore. There are a couple of good spots in nearby Palm Beach to catch decent waves if you like to surf.
For those looking for cultural activities, West Palm Beach has plenty to offer. Downtown West Palm Beach has numerous museums and theaters in one central location. For those interested in history and art, there is the Norton Museum of Art and the Armory Art Center. The performing arts are well-represented as well by Palm Beach Dramaworks, the Palm Beach Opera, Palm Beach Ballet and the Kravis Center, where numerous touring Broadway show productions are hosted every year. Popular music fans can find their favorite acts stopping by the Meyer Amphitheatre and Palm Beach County Convention Center when on tour.
Animal lovers have many options in West Palm Beach. The Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park features 1,700 animals on a 23-acre layout. Just outside the West Palm Beach city limits is Lion Country Safari, which was established in 1967 and features more than 1,000 animals kept in a large fenced area but able to roam freely. Another location to view animals up close in West Palm Beach is the Grassy Waters Preserve, a 20-square-mile wetlands preserve home to numerous species of birds, mammals and marine life.
West Palm Beach is home to several yearly events. SunFest, a festival held along the West Palm Beach waterfront, averages an annual attendance of nearly 300,000 and attracts several national pop music acts. Other annual events include the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, Palm Beach International Film Festival, Palm Beach Boat Show and Winter Equestrian Festival. Weekly events include Clematis by Night, which is a showcase for local music artists, and the Green Market, which is held every Saturday during the winter months for bargain hunters and local merchant supporters.
