Fondue Restaurants in New York

Swiss villagers invented fondue in the 18th century as a means of survival; with only stale cheese and stale bread to eat during harsh winter months, they began to melt the cheese down and add flavors to improve their meals. As the years progressed, fondue recipes evolved to the creation of gourmet dishes and lent themselves to international mediums for flavor experimentation. New York's fondue restaurants range from traditional Swiss venues to contemporary wine and tapas bars.
  1. Honey

    • Located in the meatpacking district, Honey is a restaurant, bar and lounge with a special fondue menu. The space has a warm feel with mahogany paneling, exposed brick, dark leather seating and a long wooden bar, all lit by candlelight. The dinner menu has a Mexican theme, with fajitas, tacos, burritos and grill items. To continue the theme, the fondue menu offers a Tex-Mex and a smoked Gouda chipotle fondue in addition to a classic Swiss option. The Chelsea/Meatpacking district can be very expensive at night; however, Honey provides weekly specials such as 1/2 price fondue on Tuedays, as well as a 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. happy hour on weekdays (in 2010) that features $5 wines, cocktails and draft beers. This is a good price for drinks in Manhattan, especially in a bar such as Honey that features live DJs and dancing.

    The Bourgeois Pig

    • Located in the trendy East Village, The Bourgeois Pig is a Swiss/French restaurant and lounge that offers a good selection of both savory and sweet fondues as well as tapas-style plates. Less of a dinner spot, this locale is more suited to snacking and sampling co-owner Phillip Ward's original mixology of champagne and ginger beer cocktails. The dimly lit space has a decadent feel and features a chandelier, marble bar top, throne-style seating and royal hues of red. According to "New York Magazine," the Pig has a decidedly feminine atmosphere with a predominantly female clientele. The savory fondues offer experimental mixtures such as the Indian curry "6th Street Special" fondue as well as the "Bisque Fondue." On the sweet side, the menu features dulce de leche, butterscotch and a variety of chocolate fondues; patrons may order the 50/50 option for a combination of two. If the Pig's cocktails are too creative for you, the drink menu also provides a selection of imported reserve wines and aperitifs.
