Packing correctly is one way to get through security without hassle. The TSA requires domestic travelers to follow the 3-1-1 rule for liquids in carry-on bags. Travelers can carry on liquids, like perfume, face wash and toothpaste, that are 3.4 oz. or less in size. These items must fit in a 1 quart plastic bag that the traveler places in the front of their suitcase and removes when going through security. Oversized electronics like laptops should go in carry-on bags when possible, and travelers need to remove them from the bag when going through security. In addition, travelers should not wrap gifts until they arrive at their destination; security officers might have to unwrap and inspect the gift. Although luggage rules often vary by airline, most airlines allow only one carry-on bag in addition to a personal item like a purse or briefcase. In addition, checked bags cannot exceed 50 lbs., and their combined width, length and height cannot measure more than 62 inches.
Domestic travelers need to provide proper identification to receive their boarding pass and get through security. According to the TSA, identification needs to list the traveler's name, date of birth and gender, and it must not be past its expiration date. Valid forms of identification include state-issued driver's licenses, a U.S. passport or trusted traveler card. Items like school-issued ID cards, fishing licenses and library cards do not qualify as proper identification for domestic flights.
Domestic travelers should familiarize themselves with items that they cannot bring onto the plane in a carry-on bag. The TSA prohibits sharp objects like box cutters, scissors with tips longer than 4 inches and knives. Sporting goods like baseball bats and hockey sticks are prohibited as well as tools like axes, screwdrivers longer than 7 inches and wrenches. However, travelers can include these items in checked luggage. Items that the TSA prohibits in both carry-on and checked luggage include explosives like dynamite and fireworks and flammable items like gasoline and lighter fluid.
