German Restaurants in Fredericton, New Brunswick

Fredericton, New Brunswick, is an old world riverfront city with tree-lined avenues and Victorian architecture. Visitors to Atlantic Canada enjoy its friendly, small town warmth and vibrant cultural heritage.New Brunswick is Canada's only official bilingual province, with 35 percent of the population speaking French as their primary language. An even smaller percentage is of Dutch and German ancestry. This minority is represented commercially in Fredericton by a number of fine restaurants serving authentic cuisine in locations reminiscent of the Rhine river valley.
  1. The Schnitzel Parlour

    • The Schnitzel Parlour is located at the Silverwood Motel on Woodstock Road, fifteen minutes east of downtown Fredericton. Owners Uwe and Beate Kuester also operate a nearby desert bakery, the popular Chocolaterie Fackelman.

      Schnitzel takes up most of the menu with six offerings including Jager Schnitzel with dark beef gravy and mushrooms, and Schnitzel Bombay, an exotic and inspired dish served with sweet mandarin and cream curry. Locally raised wild boar goulash is simmered in red wine and served on a bed of home made spatzle with red cabbage. Beverages are non-alcoholic but diners may bring their own wine for a five-dollar corkage fee.

      The Schnitzel Parlour operates four days a week, Tuesday to Wednesday and Friday to Saturday, from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

    Heino's German Cuisine

    • Heino's German Cuisine is operated in the John Gyles Motor Inn located one hour west of Fredericton, five miles south of Woodstock, on Route 165. Overlooking the Saint John River---the Rhine of America---Heino's offers home style German dining with picturesque views across the river and rolling farmland.

      Specialties include the Wurstplatte, three sausages with sauerkraut, vegetables and spaetzle, and Reiberdatschi, potato pancakes served with fresh applesauce and sausage. Adventurous appetites can order the Heino platter, a heavy sampler of roast beef, sauerbraten, jaeger and zigeuner steaks, with kalbsfridadellen and pepper corn sauce. Deserts include classic bienenstich and applestrudel. Beverages include a healthy representation from German breweries.

    Schade's Restaurant

    • Schade's Restaurant offers traditional German cuisine on Queen Street across from Officer's Square in downtown Fredericton.

      Owners Wolfgang and Elvira Schade operate a small but efficient establishment specializing in schnitzels served with spatzle, an authentic soft-textured egg noodle. Other selections include soups and appetizers with meat and vegetarian entrees.
