Travel Checklist for Peru

Peru is an exciting destination. With a rich culture, large cities and ancient history, the South American nation is an attractive travel destination for thousands of people every year. When traveling to a foreign country, having a good knowledge of what you need to bring is very important to the planning of your trip. There are certain things that should be on every Peru traveler's checklist.
  1. Spanish-English Dictionary and a Peruvian Handbook.

    • A Peruvian handbook of common, regional phrases will come in very handy when communicating to Peruvians outside of the larger cities, as regional dialects are more common. Some of the phrases will not be found in a Spanish-English dictionary; however, unless capable of speaking and understanding Spanish, a dictionary will also be necessary. An electronic translator is extremely useful also. A handbook of traditional customs, holidays and important facts should have a place in your suitcase as well.

    Passport

    • You cannot enter Peru without your passport. Bringing your passport is imperative. However, once in the country and settled at your accommodation, store your passport in a safe or safety deposit box at a hotel. This will prevent you losing your passport or having it stolen.

    Shoes

    • Peru houses the ruins of the Inca Civilization. These ancient sites are usually found amongst thick vegetation and forests. Bring shoes suitable to hiking and traversing through nature trails. Peru's people are smaller and finding larger sized shoes is very difficult; if your foot size is above a 7 (for females) or a 10 (for males) pack extra shoes in your suitcase.

Bug Spray, Water and Sun Screen

    • Depending on where you plan on traveling, it is important to bring bug repellent, sunscreen and bottled water. If you are staying in one of the large cities, you will not need to bring bottled water or waist suitcase space on bug repellent and sunscreen. If you are visiting remote archeological sites like Machu Pichu and other developing area, bring these important supplies, as they will not be readily available there.
