Puerto Rico is a beautiful place, full of boutique resorts, charming casinos and comfortable inns, and it's a place the whole family will love. However, its location can be hard to reach and can require a lengthy transit time, depending on how you choose to travel. Fortunately, there are ways of visiting Puerto Rico with your family that can help you make the trip without feeling overly stressed.
Book flights early. Most large airlines fly to Puerto Rico, and booking early means you are likely to get the best price. American Airlines recommends booking a child seat for each of your children, and also using an approved child safety seat, such sa the one you use to transport them in your car. Consider paying extra to ensure you get seats together, and remember that children under two can travel as "lap passengers."
Schedule your vaccinations. Most vaccinations require two weeks before they become fully active and protect you from disease. Ask your family doctor for an International Certificate of Vaccination. While you may not be required to have this, it is useful to prove that you and your family have been inoculated.
Purchase travel insurance. Contact your health insurance company, who will usually give you a competitive quote. The average price will vary depending on the ages and health of your family, but get a few quotes to make sure you are getting a good rate.
Assemble a medical kit. Take the usual contents of a First Aid kit, and a few bottles of drinking water, insect repellent and antihistamines.
Talk to your children about the trip. Puerto Rico does have some common illnesses, such as dysentery, but these are caught from drinking contaminated water. Encourage your child to only drink what you give them.
