Varadero is one of the largest resort areas in the Caribbean and is located in the province of Matanzas, Cuba. Although Varadero is generally a safe place and has numerous police officers stationed around, it is important for travelers to always monitor their belongings. Be especially careful when visiting the beach. Do not leave your belongings unattended as past tourists have reported theft.
Food and beverages are in abundance at Varadero, as a lot of the hotels and resorts offer packaged deals to their visitors. Keep in mind that food is generally cheaper in Varadero than Havana. Tap water is known to be safe to drink in Cuba; however, bottled water is strongly recommended during your stay, just to be safe. The food in Varadero is generally safe as it is a resort for international travelers.
Keep small bills on your person when traveling in Varadero. Although Varadero is generally a safe place, pickpockets have been known to strike from time to time. Also keep in mind that changing $50 and $100 bills could be hard in Varadero so a good rule of thumb is to bring smaller currency into the country when you arrive.
Don't forget to save $20 in cash for Cuba's departure tax. A good rule of thumb is once arriving in Cuba, keep $20 inside your passport so you do not forget about the tax. The departure tax must be payable by every person that is leaving the country, no exceptions.
