How to Increase Fuel Mileage Using Acetone

Fuel prices continue to burden consumers as the overall cost of living increases. Finding ways to increase fuel mileage can particularly help commuters and businesses that use vehicles. Acetone is a common chemical substance found in paint thinner and other industrial products. Drivers have reported that the use of acetone can increase gas mileage. However, drivers need to know the exact method to add acetone to a fuel tank. They can then increase fuel mileage and save on costly fuel prices.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel
  • Acetone
  • Rubber gloves
  • 100-ml graduated cylinder
  • Funnel

Instructions

    • 1

Determine mileage of your vehicle without the use of acetone. Figuring the mileage first allows you to compare mileage with and without acetone. Divide the number of miles driven by the gallons of fuel used over those miles to figure fuel mileage (miles per gallon).

    • 2

Put fuel in your tank. Note the amount of fuel added with the meter on the pump. Have the tank close to empty the first time to get more accurate measurements for adding acetone.

    • 3

Determine how much acetone to put into the fuel tank. The ideal amount to increase fuel mileage is 1 to 3 oz. of acetone per 10 gallons of gas and 1 to 2 oz. for diesel. Prepare to put in 2 oz. per 10 gallons the first time so you can adjust later to find the ideal amount for your vehicle. Use the following method to determine how to put in 2 oz. per 10 gallons:

      1. Divide the amount of fuel put into the tank by 10 gallons.
      2. Multiply that amount by 2 oz.

For example, a driver who puts in 5 gallons of gas would add 1 oz. of acetone (0.5 x 2 = 1).

Put on rubber gloves before handling the acetone. Keep a pair of gloves and the acetone in your car trunk if traveling long distances and refueling on the road.

    • 5

Take pure acetone and pour it into a 100-milliliter (ml) graduated cylinder to measure the proper amount for that tank of gas. Check in drug or hardware stores to find pure acetone. Multiply the number of ounces of acetone to add to the gas tank by 29 ml (1 oz. = 29 ml). For example, pour 58 ml of acetone into the graduated cylinder for 2 oz. of acetone. Insert a funnel into the gas tank and pour the acetone from the graduated cylinder into the funnel.

Determine the gas mileage with 2 oz. of acetone per 10 gallons of gas. Adjust up and down in the future. This will allow you to find the best amount for your vehicle.
