Air Travel Procedures

Air travel is one of the safest and quickest modes of transportation, and is utilized by millions of travelers every year. But before you head to the airport, become familiar with these tips that hopefully will help make your trip more enjoyable.

  1. Arrive Early

    • Be prepared to stand in line at security checkpoints and, even though you may have everything ready to pass through the screening process with flying colors, some of the travelers in front of you may not. Depending on the size of the airport, also allow extra time to find your departing gate.

    Proper Identification

    • Travelers 18 years old and older are required to show a U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID that contains their name, date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature. If you do not have an acceptable ID, you will have to provide information to the Transportation Security Administration officer who is checking travel documents.

    Know the 3-1-1 Rule

    • For carry-on bags, this means a 3.4 ounce bottle (or less by volume), one quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag and one bag per passenger that will be placed in a screening bin. Larger liquids like medications and breast milk should be declared for inspection. Otherwise, put liquids in your checked luggage.

    Dangerous Items

    • Sharp objects, such as knives, guns, firearms, self-defense weapons and other dangerous items are not permitted in carry-on bags. If it's necessary to take them along, pack those items in your checked luggage. Explosive materials and flammable items have to be left behind.

    Special Conditions

    • Screening programs have been established for travelers with mobility, hearing, visual or other hidden disabilities. Prescription liquid medications are permitted, but need to be declared verbally, in writing or by the person's family member, companion or caregiver.

    Be Patient

    • Getting angry and becoming verbally belligerent will not make the process go any faster, or prevent your flight from arriving or departing on time. In fact, in many instances, it will make the situation worse. Expect that an issue or two might occur, and calmly find the best resolution.
