Climate in Kiev, Ukraine

Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine and largest city in the country, is made up of more than 2.6 million people. The city was established in the 6th century A.D., when Slavic tribes inhabited central and eastern parts of Ukraine and eventually established Kiev. The city is located on the Dnieper River, and it is made up of woods, ravines and rivers. Because of its location and geography, Kiev has a varied climate, with four seasons featuring distinct weather patterns.

  1. Winters

    • Kiev has cold winters that generally start in November and continue until April. On average, its coldest month is January, when temperatures can get down to minus-10 degrees Celsius.

    Summers

    • Summers in Kiev tend to be hot but short. They last from May to September or October, and the hottest month tends to be July. During this month, temperatures can rise to 25 degrees Celsius.

    Fall and Spring

    • Kiev usually has springs and falls that are mild. Spring usually lasts from March to May, although sometimes March will have temperatures as cold as minus-4 degrees Celsius. Fall generally starts in late September or October and lasts until December, although temperatures in November can fall to 0 degrees Celsius. Autumns in Kiev are known as Indian summers because of the presence of mild temperatures and rain.

    Snow

    • In Kiev, the snowiest months tend to be December through March. On average, Kiev gets the most snowfall in January, when it can get up to nine days of snow.

    Rain

    • The rainiest months in Kiev are April through July and November, although these months get only slightly more rain than August through October. The rainiest month, on average, is June, when the city can get up to eight days of rain.
