Naples' subway system, known as Metronapoli, is an easy way to navigate the city. There are ticket machines at all stations, but American credit and debit cards are not always accepted, so it is a good idea to carry extra euros.

Buy your metro tickets before boarding and be sure to validate them. A single ticket costs 1.10 euro and is valid for 90 minutes of travel within Naples, including transfers.

To travel beyond Naples' city limits, consider the Circumvesuviana metro system. The line to Sorrento passes by the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and offers a spectacular view of Capri and Vesuvius during the ride. Round trip tickets can be had for under 5 euros. Board at Garibaldi station.

Take advantage of the coastal setting and use the ferry system. Ferries connect Naples, Capri, Sorrento, Positano, and other ports along the Amalfi coast. These can range from 9 to 16 euro depending on the type of boat (ferry or hydrofoil) and the time of day; a shorter trip during rush hour will cost more, so be sure to consult a fare schedule beforehand.
