The rocky isle of Capri juts out of the turquoise Mediterranean Sea, its beauty beckoning visitors from all over the world. Packed with chic shops, open-air restaurants, hiking trails, and spectacular views, this sparkling paradise is just a short boat ride from Italy’s Amalfi Coast and the perfect spot for a day trip.
Go to the harbor in the town of Amalfi. This historic town gives its name to the gorgeous strip of coastline where it’s located. The boat to Capri leaves from this harbor.
Buy tickets at the harbor. Tickets are fairly inexpensive (about 30 euros per person, roundtrip), but the ticket office only accepts cash, so be sure to have enough euros available.
Be on time for the boat. It leaves from Amalfi in the morning, and there’s only one, so if you don’t make it, you’ll have to wait until the next day. The same goes for the boat leaving Capri in the afternoon—miss it and you’ll be staying the night.
Grab a great seat on the boat. The ferry has an upper and lower deck. The upper provides spectacular views, but the ride can be chilly.
Take lots of pictures. The ride to Capri, which traces Italy’s rocky coastline, is almost as lovely as the island itself, so you’ll want to remember it. As you come into the Capri harbor, notice all of the brightly painted fishing boats bobbing in the water. Many of the locals who live on the island make their living on the water.
Disembark from the boat and start exploring. You can visit the Blue Grotto, a stunning cave filled with sapphire-colored water, or take the funicular up the hill to Capri proper.
