How to Ease Going Through Airport Security

In the past, you never gave a second thought about boarding an airplane, but with security at an all-time high, it's now more difficult than ever. It's particularly difficult watching people with children or the elderly run that gauntlet just to make it onto their flights. You have to take it in stride because, unfortunately, airport security is here to stay. However, there are some things you can do to make the experience less stressful.

Instructions

    • 1

Get to the airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure time. There will be times when you follow that rule and you'll go through airport security like it didn't exist. But there's nothing worse than arriving late and seeing a long, time-consuming security line that causes you to miss your flight. Also, if you are booked on connecting flights, you will likely be subjected to a more thorough search. All of that takes time, so do arrive early.

Dress appropriately to make going through airport security a lot easier. For example, you will probably be asked to remove your shoes, so you should wear those not requiring laces. Also, nothing will set off a metal detector faster than jewelry and coins, so avoid wearing or carrying more than you absolutely need. By the way, leave you favorite pocketknife at home. Just ask a security guard to show you the hundreds that have been confiscated from unknowing travelers.

Pack with security in mind. If you are going to be away for an extended time, you will probably check your luggage rather than carry it on the plane. Since you are paying for that privilege, put as many things in your checked bags as you can. The less that you have to take on board, the less you'll have to worry about security. On the other hand, if you take a bag with you, be sure that liquids and gels are all in one zip-top bag because it will be easier for airport security to check.

Get ready for your trip through the security line by having your photo identification out, and your boarding pass only for that flight removed from the envelope. If you are carrying on gels and liquids, have them ready for inspection. If asked, remove your shoes and put them on the conveyor belt. Place your jewelry and coins in the plastic container prior to going through the metal detector. If you are carrying a laptop computer, take it out of its case and place it on the belt. Likely, you will also be asked to remove your outerwear like an overcoat or hat and place it on the conveyor as well. And above all, hold on to your boarding pass because you will likely have to show it again before you leave.
