How to Avoid Security Problems at the Airport

Everyone who travels by air goes through airport security checkpoints. Security officers from the Transportation Security Administration operate these checkpoints. The more prepared you are before you get to the airport, the easier it will be to get through the security checkpoint and board your aircraft.

      Remember "3-1-1" for carry-ons. Each passenger can carry on liquid in quantities no greater than 3 oz. per container. Place the liquid container in one quart-sized clear zip-top bag. You are allowed one such bag per person. This bag must go through security by itself.

      Declare larger liquids before going through security. Medications, baby formula, baby food, breast milk and juice are allowed through security in quantities greater than 3 oz.

      Place all items that you won't need during your flight in your checked-in luggage. Checking in your luggage saves you time when going through security.

      Prepare yourself before security by removing all metal items that you have, including your belt, wallet, keys and change. Take off your coat and shoes, since these items must go through security separately.

      Pay $99.95 for a program called Clear. Members who pay the annual fee must submit to biometric and background checks. Members of this program have access to private lanes, which usher them through security quickly.
