Face traffic and look for a yellow taxi. Pay attention to the lighted sign on the top of each taxi roof to find an available car. If the words "Off Duty" are illuminated then the taxi is not in service. If the word "Taxi" is lighted, the car is available to pick you up. If it is unlit then there is a fare already in the car. Wait for an available taxi, hold out your arm and get the driver's attention. The car will pull over to let you in.
Locate the nearest hotel, theater, major rail station or other busy venue if you are having a hard time finding an available taxi. There will often be a line of taxis waiting to pick up fares at these locations. Hotel doormen will also be happy to find you a taxi in exchange for a small gratuity.
Tell the driver where you wish to go before entering the taxi unless your destination is in the immediate area. Many times drivers will not wish to drive to the destination you require as it is out of the way or there is little chance they will find a return fare. Wait for the driver to invite you in. A small gratuity is customarily given when payment is made at the end of the ride.
