  1. How to be a Respectful Tourist in New York

    • 1

Don’t stand. Period. Not in the middle of the street. Not in front of the turnstile in the subway. Not in a crowd outside Time Square. Consider that while you may be on vacation, the rest of us have places to be and do not like having to navigate around you as you take pictures of our buildings.

    • 2

If you need to use the bathroom, go to a Starbucks or a McDonald's or find a restaurant and buy a drink or a cup of coffee. Don't ask people around you. They deal with it everyday and most of them are probably trying to find one too.

    • 3

If you're taking in one of New York's many wonderful attractions (such as a museum, stadium or Broadway theatre), make sure you know the proper behavior associated with each location. At Yankee Stadium, root for the Yankees to avoid be trampled by a bunch of drunken fans. At the MOMA or the Museum of Natural History, keep your hands to yourself to avoid being trampled by an angry security guard. And do not wear jeans or shorts to the theatre.

    • 4

It's okay to ask us questions, we won’t bite. Just don’t engage us in a half-hour conversation about where you’re from, why you’re here and how you’re state or country is different from ours. We don’t care.

    • 5

Don’t talk loudly in lines, subways or public places. No one shares in your excitement or wants to hear about the places you’re going or how you’re going to get there. Practice “inside voices” even if you’re outside.

    • 6

Don’t wear bright, identical shirts. Would you do that in your own state? Even if you are a church group, God likes a little variety.

    • 7

Have fun and please, try to be normal.
