Check with the Department of Motor Vehicles, if you are a U.S. citizen, to determine the validity of your driver's license. If your trip to Ireland is less than six months long, a valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license that you have had for longer than six months will be sufficient.
Research your driving record (see Resources) if you plan to rent a car in Ireland. Some car rental companies in Ireland check driving records before renting out vehicles.
Apply for an international driver's permit (see Resources) if you will be driving in more than one country or you have had your license for less than six months. An international driver's permit will also provide a form of identification that is acceptable in most countries.
