Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Places to Eat

Although surrounded by Saskatchewan’s flat and desolate prairie land, the small town of Moose Jaw comes alive with a quaint yet bustling downtown lined with gas lampposts, hanging flower pots, lazy coffeehouses, boutique shops and historic buildings -- including the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre, which stages live theatrical productions in three early 1900 brick structures. When hunger strikes, head down Main Street and along many of its side streets, where you’ll find an eclectic array of restaurants from which to choose.
  1. Asian Cuisine

    • Asian cuisine is on hand in Moose Jaw, beginning with Nit's Thai Food Restaurant. Housed inside a rustic brick building adorned with old-fashioned neon and marquee signs, the restaurant serves Canadian and Chinese cuisine but specializes in Thai food. Standard Thai cuisine on hand includes pad Thai, beef curried soup and chicken satay with peanut sauce. If you’re worried about scorching hot food, speak to your server about the spice factor of various chili peppers. For a host of options, head to Saigon 75, which serves Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai cuisine in small and casual quarters. While the restaurant provides such items as spring rolls and wonton noodle soup, the kitchen specializes in curry dishes cooked in clay pots, with the chef adding spicy peppers based on your preference.

    Upscale Dining

    • Treat yourself to a night of high-end dining with a visit to Harwood’s Dining Room. The upscale restaurant in Temple Gardens Mineral Spa Resort includes brown leather chairs, candlelight, fresh flowers and white tablecloths. Hearty cuisine includes prime rib, berry-glazed pork ribs and oven-roasted rack of lamb. The restaurant also serves a Sunday brunch. For a shabby chic dining experience, make your way to Kergano's Bar and Grill. The rustic dining room includes exposed wood beam ceilings, chocolate brown leather furnishings and hardwood tables and flooring. On many nights, the restaurant has live bands to provide entertainment as you sample such dishes as 35-day dry-aged beef, roasted eggplant and smoked pork ribs.

    Comfort Food

    • Enjoy comfort food at Deja Vu Cafe in a cozy setting, complete with oversized black leather booths, chalkboard menus and hardwood floors. Chow down on more than 50 flavors of chicken wings and dipping sauces, including such selections as coconut curry, salt and vinegar and maple apple and beer. Wash it all down with one of the restaurant’s more than 70 milkshakes, such as chocolate marshmallow or strawberry shortcake. For hearty selections, visit Hickory Smokehouse and Grill, which is inside a large brick building. Stuff yourself silly with barbecued burgers, slow-smoked chicken and ribs and slow wood-smoked prime rib. Take advantage of the all-you-can-eat ribs special, offered two nights a week, or head to the attached lounge where you can enjoy a pint of domestic beer.

    Bars and Pubs

    • Unwind in the laid-back setting of Original Joe's Restaurant and Bar as you lounge about the outdoor patio, sipping on beers. The restaurant brews its own beers, with at least five varieties available on tap, including blond lagers, honey brown lagers and red ales. The menu includes traditional bar food such as nachos, short ribs, chicken wings and the Canadian favorite, poutine. You can also grab a beer at The Cornerstone Inn Pub & Eatery, a casual restaurant housed inside a brick building and outfitted with plush oversized booths, dark wood furnishings and big screen televisions that air sporting events. The eclectic menu includes Shanghai noodle bowls, sweet potato fries and pizza. The full bar hosts happy hour sessions daily and provides discounted drinks for ladies on Saturday nights.
